DTF powder — also sold as DTF transfer powder — is the TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) hot-melt adhesive that bonds a Direct-to-Film print to fabric. After a DTF printer lays DTF ink onto a coated PET transfer film (the DTF film), the powder is sprinkled onto the wet ink, melted in a curing oven, then heat-pressed onto the garment. Unlike DTG (direct-to-garment) printing, which jets ink straight onto the fabric, DTF transfers are built on the film first and pressed on second — and the powder is the layer that makes that bond hold. DTF is an actively patented transfer process (US patent WO2024185795A1, 2024).
