Commodity-grade hot melt film used in sports wear elastic bands doesn’t hold elasticity, or soft drape of the material after a few months of wear11. Traditional methods such as stitch, leave wear points, stitch holes and a stiff seam allowance that resists the stretch of athletic fabric. Liquid adhesives and glues, that require long dry times and introduce the use of volatile organic compounds and improper wetting, have also been common.
Teng Yang’s TPU hot melt adhesive film avoids the shortcomings of each; forming a solid film that melts quickly and bonds in seconds when heated under pressure, allowing for evenly wetted substrate surfaces and even application of adhesive. The secret lies in TPU’s inherent physical (as opposed to chemical) cross-linking between soft segments and hard segments within its polymer structure — the key reason EVA and other hot melt chemistries can’t be reheated and re-bonded, or match TPU’s elongation recovery1. A typical query from new users is “what’s the” specification for a TPU hot melt film adhesive – and asking for “the” specification betrays the inherent issue; a single grade won’t be appropriate for a low melt, delicate fabric 65°C application, and a high melt, automotive 130°C headliner application, since each end of that range is a real compromise in the polymer’s activation window. TPU vs EVA vs PA Hot Melt Film, Which Chemistry Fits Your Application?
More than likely your procurement team defaults to EVA hot melt film due to EVA’s low activation temperature and low per-roll cost. Sometimes, alternative chemistries like reactive PUR hot melt adhesive are considered less expensive than TPU hot melt film. Reactive PUR isn’t a like-for-like replacement, though: it has between 2-5% free isocyanate monomer (usually 4,4’-MDI, a respiratory sensitizer) and requires moisture-barrier packaging plus multi-day cure times, per the background section of US Patent US20170058163A14. TPU hot melt film is non-reactive, cures in seconds, and contains no free isocyanate monomer — a genuine safety and process-ease factor, not just a sales pitch.

Is TPU hot melt adhesive film the same as TPU film?
No. TPU film is pure TPU resin, ready to use without heating, typically made by blow-molding or casting2. TPU hot melt adhesive film is a composite of TPU resin plus tackifying resin, supplied as granules or coated rolls that must be heat-melted to bond. They share a base polymer family but are different products for different jobs2.

Why does TPU cost more than EVA hot melt film?
TPU’s higher unit price reflects its wider elasticity range, stronger chemical/oil resistance, and better wash-cycle durability on stretch fabric – properties that matter for performance apparel and footwear but are often unnecessary for lower-stress, economy-grade lamination, where EVA remains a reasonable choice.

How do I choose between the low, medium, and high melt-point grades?
Match the grade to your most heat-sensitive input material, not to your press equipment’s maximum temperature. Delicate fabrics like silk or lycra call for a low-melt grade (around 65°C) to avoid fabric damage during lamination; general textile and footwear work is well served by the medium band; automotive interior components exposed to solar heat need the high-melt band.

Does TPU hot melt adhesive film come with or without release paper?
Both. Backed film is easier to position by hand; bare film suits roll-to-roll lines.

How can I verify a grade’s melt point matches the datasheet before a bulk order?
Ask for a pre-production sample and press it at the datasheet-specified temperature and dwell time on your actual substrate, then check bond strength before and after a wash cycle relevant to your end use. This is the same protocol used in formulation testing: press onto the target fabric, then measure peel strength before and after washing, not just at time zero.

What’s the difference between TPU hot melt film and hot melt web/mesh?
Film is a solid sheet – better for high stress structural bonding, but has lower air permeability. Web/mesh is a spun, non-woven like structure, it has more breathability and is often used when the bonded panel still needs to breathe (think: underwear, yoga wear, technical base layers).
