Across the board, film is provided on release paper, release film or carrier-free structures, with the carrier selection influencing positioning, peeling, storage, and cleanliness of the surfaces. Here, process takes precedence over material, leading to the second, more complex layer of comparisons that delineates the “laminated” and “coated” fabric worlds. A hot-melt laminated fabric sandwiches and fuses a TPU membrane or adhesive layer to a base fabric using heat and pressure, whereas a coated fabric involves the application of a liquid polymer-typically PU, PVC, or acrylic-using a knife or roller, which then cures. Although both make fabric waterproof, their end-of-life properties differ. Hot melt lamination usually exhibits better water-vapor permeability, enhanced low-temperature flexibility, and stronger hydrolytic resistance-especially the ether-based TPU compounds-while solvent coating allows for more variety in color and finish, and typically at lower cost per unit. Counterintuitively for many purchasers, solvent-based adhesives are not automatically stronger; the strength of the bond is a function of chemistry, substrate, and coat weight, not whether a solvent is present or not. Frankly, none of our materials wins in every situation. Unike sales pitches claiming that one chemistry is the all-purpose miracle worker, Tengyang will never promise that TPU out-performs PES in terms of dimensional stability or EVA for price-the perennial pitfall is simply to over-specify. A correctly-matched film will often substitute a two-step powder-then-press method for a streamlined process-exactly the efficiency TPU enables. Where other suppliers will send a generic film for any application, Tengyang matches grades on our proprietary production lines: the bond required at 130°C for the interior of a vehicle won’t work on a 100°C delicate laminate because the activation temperatures don’t align. Choose by your most heat-sensitive substrate and your press ceiling, not by “strongest.” Low-temperature film (activates near 100°C) protects delicate or coated fabrics; high-temperature film (170–190°C) delivers the best wash and heat resistance but needs equipment that reaches those temperatures. Medium grade (130–150°C) covers most sportswear, underwear and automotive interior work.

Release paper aids positioning and hand placement; release film suits cleaner or transparent bonds; carrier-free is used where the film goes straight into an automated line. The right carrier depends on your process — tell us how the film is fed and we match it.

Yes — wash durability is one of TPU’s core strengths, but it scales with grade rather than being a single guaranteed number. Low-temperature films suit gentle-care goods and hand wash; medium grades handle everyday machine wash; high-temperature films survive repeated industrial or hot wash cycles and dry cleaning. Because the result also depends on your activation temperature, pressure and substrate, confirm your wash temperature and cycle count up front, and we will select and sample the grade that holds through your validation test.

Bubbles almost always come from trapped moisture or air in the substrate, not the film. Dry the base material before bonding and ensure uniform pressure across the press; both are common fixes in textile and foam lamination.

Weak bonds usually trace to three causes: activation temperature set too low for the grade, insufficient or uneven pressure, or a low-energy substrate that needed surface pre-treatment (corona, plasma or primer). A slightly higher, grade-correct temperature and even pressure resolve most peel issues.

No. Plain TPU film is a functional layer; the adhesive film is a bonding layer. Many laminated fabrics use both.

It is solvent-free and contains no volatile organic compounds (as classified under US EPA 40 CFR 51.100), so it eliminates the VOC handling, ventilation and solvent residue associated with liquid glue. That is both an environmental and a workshop-cleanliness advantage.

Place the film between your two materials, apply heat and pressure at the grade’s activation temperature, then let it cool into the bond. Beyond textiles it also works for metal and plastic substrates as well as foam and leather; for metal, confirm the surface is clean and, where needed, primed.
