Combustible-Dust Screening for Hot Melt Adhesive Powder

No powder supplier can hand you a dust class — ignition behaviour is a property of the cloud in your line, not of the material in the bag. What a supplier can do is tell you which questions your file has to answer, and admit which numbers do not exist. This does both.

1. Is the powder ever suspended in air on your line?A scatter head, a sinter oven’s extraction, a dust collector, a bag dump station, an air conveyor — any of these count.

2. Do you have a Dust Hazard Analysis for this material and this process?A DHA is a systematic review of the fire, flash-fire and explosion hazards of your process. The obligation sits on the facility owner or operator.

3. Does your file cite NFPA 652?Since December 2024 the presiding document is NFPA 660, which consolidated NFPA 652, 654, 61, 484, 655 and 664 into chapters of one standard. NFPA 652 is on a slipping cycle and will not be updated again.

4. Are you relying on a 420-micron threshold to rule the dust out?Worth checking. The current OSHA definition is behavioural, not dimensional.

5. Are you assuming a coarser cut is the safer cut?Also worth checking.

6. Has a supplier given you a Kst, Pmax, MIE or ST class for this powder?Including us. Note carefully what we say about this below.

What we will not give you, and why

No Kst, Pmax, MIE or ST-class value exists in the public record for copolyamide, copolyester, TPU or EVA hot melt powder — and Teng Yang has measured none. Any supplier who hands you one for a grade name is telling you something the published literature does not contain. Ask them for the method, the chamber and the sample preparation before you file it.

The nearest published attestations sit on other polymers, and we cite them as such: PA12 powder measures Kst 116.6 bar·m/s, Pmax 6.76 bar at 750 g/m³, minimum ignition temperature 350 °C and a lower explosion limit of 30 g/m³ (peer-reviewed, open access). PA12 is not copolyamide hot melt. OSHA’s own example table offers polymethyl acrylate at St 2 as its only thermoplastic exemplar.

Basis. Definitions and the ST bands come from OSHA CPL 03-00-008 (effective 30 January 2023) and OSHA 3371 (2009). The DHA framework entered the record through NFPA 652 and now sits in NFPA 660; we have read the 652 wording, not 660’s renumbering, and do not assert those clause numbers survived the consolidation. Nothing here is a Teng Yang measurement. This tool is a screening aid for your own file — it is not a Dust Hazard Analysis and does not substitute for one.
