The chart describes mass per area only. Its labels do not indicate composition, weave, porosity, coating chemistry, adhesive distribution, performance, or thickness. Two materials can share the same GSM and behave differently because their structures are different.
What GSM and Oz/yd² Actually Measure
GSM means grams per square metre. Oz/yd² means avoirdupois ounces per square yard. Both are areal-mass units: mass divided by area. They identify how much mass is distributed across a defined surface, not the material’s thickness, density, roll length, or total weight.
That’s why a direct GSM-to-micron or GSM-to-mil conversion isn’t available. Thickness depends on density, void fraction, compression, surface structure, layer count, and the measurement method. For porous textiles, webs, foams, adhesive dots, and multilayer laminates, a single bulk-density assumption can be especially misleading.
The public abstract for ISO 3801:1977 addresses mass per unit length and mass per unit area for woven fabrics. It also notes that width can relate the two for some fabrics while structural variation can make the distinction important for others. If a supplier gives grams for a specimen, calculate the specimen area in square metres before calling the result GSM. If a supplier gives grams per linear metre, fabric width becomes a required input. In textile coating and lamination, one “GSM” field can describe different physical layers. The arithmetic 35 + 7 = 42 GSM is intentionally simple. Its value is the ownership label. If one quotation lists a 42 GSM finished construction and another lists a 7 GSM adhesive add-on, the two numbers aren’t competing offers for the same property.

Error 1: regard total grams as GSM. A 10-gram sample doesn’t have a GSM of 10 unless its area is exactly one square metre. Divide sample weight by sample area in square metres.
Error 2: disregard width in linear weight. Grams per linear metre and ounces per linear yard require width and an explicit construction before they can be turned into mass per area.
Error 3: convert to thickness. It’s possible for one material to be heavier without being proportionally thicker. Density, loft, weave, compression, pores, coating pattern, and layer count all matter.
Error 4: change the property owner without saying so. A coating add-on value isn’t a total laminate value. A substrate value doesn’t include a coating unless explicitly stated.
Error 5: establish a new tolerance through rounding. Conversion factors change units. They do not widen or tighten the specification, choose a guard band, or establish measurement uncertainty.
