Engineering Note, Two Chemistry Axes, Not One

Polyether/polyester/polycaprolactone is the soft-segment chemistry-the polyol side of the polymer that governs hydrolysis resistance, low-temperature flexibility, and chemical resistance. Aromatic/aliphatic refers to a separate axis-the hard-segment (diisocyanate) type-which governs UV stability and yellowing resistance (not cold or moisture). Many tpu film references conflate the two; the distinction matters, because you may need an aromatic-polyether film (our default, low-cost option for cold and humidity performance) or an aliphatic-polyether film (which includes UV resistance for areas with sunlight exposure, like outdoor storage).

Elongation at break is the only other metric to verify along with thickness and hardness. A film formulated for maximum elongation performance on a die-cutting line performs very differently than a film formulated for dimensionally stable parts-they aren’t substitutable, even if their nominal hardness is the same. Polyester TPU isn’t “worse” than polyether; it’s engineered to excel in dry, oil/chemical-exposed, high-temperature environments, areas where polyether would underperform.
