What Is TPU Film? Types, Properties & Applications

TPU film is a thin sheet of thermoplastic polyurethane, which is an elastic plastic that can serve as a membrane, a heat-activated bonding layer or a protective layer. For buyers asking “what is TPU film,” the grade and the completed structure determine which of the above mentioned possibilities the film serves. Related chemistry can be found in a clear roll, an adhesive film and a protective surface film. However, they may meet different requirements.

Start from the functionality your product requires, then decide on the chemistry, thickness and converting process. The guide below separates those decisions and shows how published film specifications translate into a useful sample request.

What Is TPU Film Made Of?

Soft and hard TPU segments explain elasticity and heat processing; conceptual structure.

Thermoplastic polyurethane is made up of flexible soft segments and rigid/hard segments that provide physical junctions between chains. With the help of processing heat, thermoplastic polyurethane takes the shape of a thin film and, after cooling, retains the set shape. The physical junctions allow elastic recoil of the film after deformation. A film producer using an appropriate formulation and suitable process conditions can fabricate film with the desired properties.

In their study of different soft segments, Jin and co-workers describe the role of polyols, di-isocyanates and chain extenders. The physical interactions between hard segments help the film recoil after deformation. Processing heat weakens the interactions and breaks the physical junctions.

TPU is a type of thermoplastic elastomer, with behaviors similar to plastic and rubber. It isn’t a separate rubber film, and polyurethane is a broader family that includes materials with various mechanisms of cure. “Made of TPU” defines a family of materials, not a complete specification.

A converter, receiving a roll only labeled “clear polyurethane film,” must still discern if the polyurethane is functional and intended to stretch, if it becomes an adhesive upon heating and/or if it’s to remain as a protective layer. All of these roles may require different grades. The function of the film and its grade determine the relevant processing data. Use adhesive-film settings if the film is to be used as a bonding layer, and technical-film settings if the film is to be used as a structural layer.

Manufacturers do use TPU formulations during extrusion; the resulting film may be laminated, welded or thermoformed into the required construction. Covestro’s structure guide explains why both the building blocks and the manner in which the material is processed determine the characteristics of the finished product.

Types of TPU Film: Choose the Chemistry

TPU chemistry has separate polyol and isocyanate axes; based on published chemistry guidance.

Film may be formulated along two separate axes, the polyol family e.g. polyether or polyester, and the isocyanate family e.g. aromatic or aliphatic. Within a polyether family, a grade may still be aromatic. The service environment would determine which family of the soft segment is selected, and color stability would be specified if the layer is intended to be visible.

The Two-Axis TPU Fit Map below is a basic framework to help specify a TPU grade. It’s developed using manufacturer chemistry guidance, and a technical explanation of film functions in the Adhesives & Sealants Industry.

TPU film selection has 2 chemistry axes; choose the film function separately.
Choice What it helps address What to specify next
Polyether soft segment A starting candidate for wet-service hydrolysis resistance and low-temperature flexibility Exposure, duration, film role and grade-specific aging results
Polyester soft segment A candidate for suitable mechanical, oil-contact and bonding requirements Actual chemical medium and wet-aging performance, including stabilization
Aliphatic isocyanate Color stability where a visible surface faces ultraviolet exposure Appearance criteria and weathering conditions for the complete construction
Aromatic isocyanate Grades used where other performance requirements take priority Whether color change matters in the intended location

Family-level tendencies exist. Covestro states that in practice, failures of stabilized flexible polyester grades are very rare, despite their tendency to hydrolyze under hot and humid conditions. Rejecting every polyester film due to some exposure to moisture would eliminate several useful candidates.

Picture a textile engineer developing a washable and stretchable laminate for outerwear. Prolonged damp service makes polyether TPU film a sensible family to investigate, but the engineer still has to choose a membrane or an adhesive layer. For the textile engineer, the appearance of the film after weathering becomes a consideration. In order to evaluate the film’s serviceability, staff has to agree upon aging conditions and the type of tests to be performed on the laminate. The staff has to record the fabric moisture and conditioning prior to the bonding process. For the press trial, measure the fabric moisture and record the fabric conditioning. The practical decision is the use of a specified and measured material combined with a controlled bonding process. For the trial, document the condition of the fabric.

For a bonding application, compare that candidate with suitable polyester adhesive-film grades. The important consideration here’s the evaluated behavior of the proposed grade in your assembly.

Key Properties: Flexibility, Strength and Water Vapor

Water resistance, vapor transmission and air permeability require distinct evidence; test worksheet.

The useful properties of TPU are the ones measured for the proposed film and its proposed job. Tensile strength, elongation, hardness and tear resistance describe different behavior. Water-vapor transport, liquid-water transport and air transport describe different behaviors; include each behavior required for the job.

Nine property fields turn TPU film claims into comparable sample requirements.
Property Record with the result Buyer decision
Tensile strength MPa, direction, gauge and test method Compare resistance to tensile loading
Elongation and recovery Break strain versus recovery after the intended stretch Separate extensibility from repeated-use elasticity
Tear resistance Initiation/propagation method, force and thickness Assess edges, notches and the relevant failure mode
Hardness Scale, specimen preparation and temperature Relate handling and feel to a defined specimen
Resistance to abrasion Contact material, load, cycles and endpoint Evaluate wear and tear under the expected contact
Water-vapor transmission Method, both-side humidity, temperature, thickness and units Compare moisture transport under matched conditions
Liquid-water resistance Water pressure, duration and specimen construction Evaluate the barrier, including relevant seams
Optical clarity Haze, transmission, color and surface texture Define the appearance instead of asking for “clear”
Heat and chemical resistance Temperature, medium, exposure time and retained property Match the material to the actual environment

This is a requirements worksheet, not a table of universal TPU values. ISO 527-3:2018, confirmed in 2024, covers tensile-test conditions for plastic films or sheets less than 1 mm thick. The scope of this should not be extended to a textile-reinforced finished laminate automatically.

“In most cases, comparison between films of dissimilar thickness is not valid.”

A request for high tensile strength or high abrasion resistance requires a test definition. The same applies to “excellent transparency” and “wide temperature range”: each of these phrases should be defined along with the conditions for exposure.

Is TPU film waterproof?

Specified TPU membranes can resist liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass. Continuous thin films can transport water molecules and a microporous structure can also provide a transport route for water vapor. Thickness and seam integrity will determine what liquid-water and vapor requirements the construction meets.

The 2025 study of silicone-modified TPU membranes evaluated nonporous and microporous specimens separately: the denser specimen resisted greater water pressure, while the porous specimen transmitted more moisture. Results from the lab study depicted a construction tradeoff and shouldn’t be construed as purchase specifications for an unrelated commercial roll.

ASTM E96/E96M-24a cautions against predicting water-vapor transmission across different methods or conditions. Turan’s polyurethane-film research also shows that relative humidity and conditioning affect transport. With a breathable TPU membrane, the method and conditions of the test should be specified as well as the number.

TPU Film Uses: Membranes, Bonding and Protective Layers

Membrane, adhesive and technical TPU layers have different jobs; client film photo.

A TPU film’s role determines which properties are most significant. A textile membrane controls transport through a construction; an adhesive film joins layers; a technical film can provide flexibility, containment or surface protection. Finished accessories add their own coatings and adhesives, so their performance belongs to that assembled product.

The industry technical Q&A describes polyurethane films serving as adhesive and barrier layers, including textile emblems and automotive interiors. A membrane, a bond line and an inflatable structure all need different acceptance tests. High elasticity or toughness alone doesn’t identify which film products suit each job.

An interior trim converter may need a layer that stays intact during forming and assembly. A garment laminator may need a film that activates between fabrics. The function of a layer can determine the type of TPU material required even at the same gauge. State the function of the layer needed before comparing film materials.

Are TPU and PPF the same?

TPU refers to a family of materials. PPF refers to a finished paint protection film product. A protective-film system can combine a polymer base, adhesive and engineered protective coating. Scratch recovery, stain resistance, and installation behavior are associated with the finished system. An uncoated technical film shouldn’t inherit these characteristics of a PPF advertisement.

For a specific example, 3M Series 150 refers to a polyurethane base film, clear coat, and pressure-sensitive adhesive, and Scratch Recovery, in the same description. The example doesn’t illustrate that the substrate alone causes that result.

For TPU screen protectors, compare fit, optical quality, coatings and adhesive with the intended tempered glass alternative. Biocompatibility of medical devices, dressing products and other medical applications requires use-related evidence to substantiate the properties of the material and finished product of the medical field.

How TPU Hot Melt Adhesive Film Works

TB95 melt, press and dwell settings are distinct; Tengyang's published grade table.

TPU hot melt adhesive film, when subjected to the specified process, softens, flows and wets the surface, then sets as it cools. The film grade’s melt behavior, the press setup, and the finished bond’s service requirements are other specifications. A melt point shouldn’t be treated as a press temperature or a continuous use temperature rating.

Covestro highlights film-based textile bonding by adding an adhesive layer between materials like fabric, nonwovens and foam. Adhesive films, once activated, cool and solidify. Published research on reactive PUR distinguishes that physical setting from the later moisture-driven chemical crosslinking of reactive polyurethane hot melts.

Dry films eliminate the need for applying solvent-borne liquids at the bonding stage, as the adhesive layer is provided as a dry film. Surface preparation and other converting operations are part of the process specification.

Source: Tengyang’s TPU hot melt adhesive film grades. These are published manufacturer recommendations for identified products. The table doesn’t qualify a process for every substrate, thickness or press.

Consider a converter evaluating TB95 between a fabric and a piece of foam. The 95°C melt point and 110-115°C press range answer different questions. If a press is set to the lower number, it doesn’t ensure that the listed conditions are met. The converter records the chosen dwell within the published 10–30-second range, the actual assembly, pressure and cooling procedure. Quality personnel compare samples that were tested at the same elapsed time after bonding. If one sample is tested immediately and the other after conditioning, their test histories differ. The comparison then mixes the material with those test histories. A strong initial bond is useful evidence, but the planned wash, flex or aging test still has to represent the finished product.

A thermoplastic-lamination troubleshooting guide mentions that poor bonds may be a result of inadequate activation, excessive heat and/or pressure. Using a higher temperature to investigate a process condition may damage the substrate.

TPU vs PVC, PE and Other Film Materials

Compare TPU, PVC, PE and silicone by defined tests and matched conditions, not a universal ranking.

Look at properties relevant to construction and compare families of similar TPU, PVC, polyethylene and silicone materials, then compare similar grades with equivalent test methods. Different formulations and structures make these material families differ from each other. Compare materials for the intended product in terms of stretch, barrier performance, appearance and joining. In such a case, it may not be correct to award one material the highest overall rank.

How does TPU film compare to PVC film?

As for TPU film and PVC film, the comparison is more appropriate at the level of specified grades and constructions. Flexibility and tear behavior as well as appearance and bonding may differ considerably among products of the same family made from different formulations or varying thickness and processed under different conditions. The comparison should be limited to the property required, grade specified and test method used for the same application. One name of a finished film may not suffice to make a comparative study of two materials.

Use a short comparison sheet: required stretch and recovery; relevant barrier properties; heat or chemical exposure; surface finish; and the intended welding or lamination process. A commodity packaging sheet and an elastic bonding film may solve different problems even when both arrive as clear rolls.

If a buyer receives a thicker alternative with a larger tear-force result, the first question is how the specimens were tested. ASTM D1004 limits the interpretation of dissimilar-thickness comparisons and cautions against simple force-per-thickness normalization. This is more of an incentive to align the comparison, rather than an indicator that a preferred material will be chosen.

This is also the case when claims of high mechanical strength, wear resistance or chemical resistance are made. State what conditions the result must be valid under in relation to your product. Otherwise, comparing the results of characteristics of TPU on a sales sheet with a competitor’s test report is extremely difficult.

How to Choose and Buy TPU Film

A TPU sample brief defines the assembly, test age and net film area; based on the inquiry worksheet.

A TPU film inquiry states the function of the layer, intended substrates, film dimensions, exposure and acceptance criteria. These assist a film supplier in proposing an identifiable grade and sample format. Procurement can then compare equivalent offers, while Production and Quality staff evaluate the material for the intended use.

Copy the fields below into your inquiry. The examples of dimensions shown are for illustration only and are not recommended for a given application. ASTM D903 provides a reminder that comparative peel test results require definition of specimen preparation, conditioning and test speed, and temperature.

RFQ checklist — copy these into your quote request:

Seven inquiry fields connect the film specification to sample acceptance.
Parameter Recommended range Why it matters How to verify
Film function Define membrane, bonding or protective duty Selects the relevant product family Confirm grade and construction
Thickness Example: 0.050 mm = 50 µm; state tolerance Separates gauge from liner thickness Measure net film using an agreed method
Roll dimensions Example: 1 m wide × 100 m long Defines usable area and converting fit Confirm width, length and edge allowance
Substrate and process Actual materials; temperature °C, time s, pressure Affects activation and bond formation Trial the intended assembly and equipment
Service exposure Record temperature °C, humidity %, duration h and media Makes aging requirements explicit Agree relevant exposure and retained-property tests
Bond acceptance Method, required force, conditioning and test age h Makes sample results comparable Record preparation, cooling and failure mode
Appearance and handling Define haze/color, texture, winding and liner side Connects the sample to conversion and use Approve a representative converted sample

Consider a hypothetical quote of $300 for net film 1 m wide and 100 m long, with shipping excluded. The area is 1 × 100 = 100 m², so the quoted film cost is $300 ÷ 100 = $3/m². Comparing the prices would require aligning the width, length, and thickness of the film, and the construction and backing, if any, of the film. A release liner adds handling material without adding net functional-film area. The procurement office should normalize the specified film first, and then add freight and other charges. For this example, the price of $3/m² is for illustrative purposes, and doesn’t reflect the published prices of Tengyang films, or any market prices.

For samples, distinguish a small material swatch from a roll long enough to evaluate feeding and bonding on the intended equipment. Agree on the test conditions, the time after the bond was made, and the acceptance criteria prior to running the test. A list of TPU film manufacturers, for example, supports identification of possible sources; the specification allows comparison of the offers.

What Is Changing in TPU Film Development?

Cold positioning and hot fixing in FRAMIS ITALIA's disclosed multilayer concept; availability unproven.

Purchasers are looking at more complex film constructions. For example, a film may need to carry a printed circuit, or hold a position before being fixed by heat. A film may also need to adhere to substrate or join multiple layers. This adds requirements on the film beyond flexibility. Specify what must survive printing, bonding and use before selecting a development sample.

In its March 2026 Techtextil announcement, Covestro mentioned TPU films as a substrate for flexible printed electronics in protective apparel. This example highlights the relevance of film printability, stretchability and integration beyond the properties of an unconverted roll.

This application isn’t new. Textile World published in 2015 on DuPont’s electronic inks printed on TPU film supplied by Bemis and laminated into a shirt. The 2026 example demonstrates ongoing development, not the first use of TPU in electronics.

Further developments could be in multilayer adhesives. FRAMIS ITALIA’s WO2025074324A1 application, published in 2025 with a 2023 priority filing, describes a thermoplastic layer combined with a pressure-sensitive layer for cold positioning followed by hot fixing. Its claims include TPU-layer alternatives. The disclosure identifies a concept and combination, but doesn’t reveal an available product from Tengyang.

For a new program, request a sample that includes the relevant ink, adhesive or facing layer, and have it tested in the converted state. A printable surface, a soft base film and a strong bond can each be satisfactory in isolation while their combination still needs evaluation. This is where recent developments in film impact the purchasing decision: the interface becomes part of the specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can TPU film be printed on?

TPU film can be printed when the surface and ink system are compatible.
Film grade, surface energy, pretreatment and drying conditions affect adhesion. Evaluate the printed surface after the stretching, heat exposure or lamination expected in use, because a clean initial print does not establish durability after converting. Supply the intended ink and substrate information with the sample request, and agree which appearance and adhesion results will define acceptance for the finished construction.

Can TPU film be used for outdoor applications?

Outdoor applications use specified TPU grades and constructions suited to their exposure.
Aliphatic chemistry is commonly chosen where color stability matters, but appearance is only one requirement. Moisture, temperature, mechanical loading, coating and adhesive compatibility also affect the finished product. Define the exposure and the property that must be retained, then evaluate a representative construction. A film’s clear appearance when supplied does not establish an outdoor lifetime or a weathering result.

Is TPU film recyclable?

Clean thermoplastic TPU can be remelted in suitable material-recovery processes.
Fabric, coatings, adhesive layers, pigments and contamination change which recovery route can handle a finished laminate. Repeated heating can also affect the recovered material’s properties. Identify whether the stream is clean production scrap or a mixed used product, and establish how it will be collected and processed. Calling a base material recyclable does not establish local collection or recovery of every composite.

What’s the difference between TPU and silicone?

TPU is thermoplastic; conventional cured silicone remains a crosslinked material.
Compare the actual grades, heat exposure and joining process before choosing a film for the intended assembly.

What is the disadvantage of TPU?

TPU performance is sensitive to formulation, exposure and processing conditions.
A grade selected for flexibility may not meet another grade’s chemical, appearance or bonding requirements. Heat history and surface compatibility also matter during converting. Specify the properties needed for the particular job, because success in one application does not establish suitability for every product.

Where can I buy thermoplastic polyurethane?

Resin suppliers sell TPU raw material; film manufacturers and converters supply finished rolls.
Film rolls and molding resin are different TPU products. A textile laminator normally needs a specified membrane or adhesive film. State the function, substrates and converting process before requesting a grade and sample format. When comparing TPU film products, identify who makes the film and who supplies it. A small swatch answers different questions from a trial roll used on production equipment, so include the sample purpose in the inquiry.
